Zehn Jahre ist die norddeutsche Death Metal-Formation schon unterwegs und noch kein bisschen müde. SCYTHE, die inzwischen auf Duogröße geschrumpft sind, zeigen auch im Jahre 2004 mit ihrem dritten Silberling, dass sie von belanglosem Gebolze meilenweit entfernt sind. "The Process of Rotting" besticht durch eine ganz eigene und düstere Atmosphäre, die gepaart mit eingängigen Riffs und morbiden Melodien ziemlich originelle Songs ergeben.

Musikalisch sind SCYTHE eher dem Elchtod der frühen Neunziger zuzuordnen, doch das würde dem Stil der Band nicht gerecht werden. Ein wenig UNLEASHED, ein wenig GRAVE und ein wenig akustische Parts a lá "Orchid" von OPETH vermischt beschreiben das Gebräu von SCYTHE ganz gut. Abwechslung ist also geboten und egal ob es sich um schnelle, schleppende oder sogar ruhigere Songs und Passagen handelt, SCYTHE geben immer eine gute Figur ab, selbst wenn es ein paar Durchgänge braucht dies anzuerkennen. Gerade längere Songs wie "Solitude" funktionieren hervorragend, schließlich baut sich die Atmosphäre dort am besten auf.

Die Überraschung des Albums jedoch ist der Black Metal-Song "Son of the Winter", der zeigt, dass SCYTHE es auch schaffen diese Schublade aufzuwühlen und gehen dabei in Richtung der ersten NAGELFAR. Das heißt dieser Song ist atmosphärisch, rasend und dennoch melodisch, will sich aber so gar nicht ins Gesamtbild einfügen und hinterlässt einige Fragen. Davon abgesehen ist die Scheibe eine herrliche Angelegenheit für old-school Death Metaller, die mit der rauhen, aber dennoch fetten Produktion ordentlich Druck macht.

Wäre der Gesang noch etwas mitreißender und abwechslungsreicher und wären einige kleine Längen wie in "Silent is the Future" nicht vorhanden, so gäbe es eine uneingeschränkte Kaufempfehlung. Dennoch sind SCYTHE mit "The Process of Rotting" eine gelungene Bereicherung für einen Sektor, dessen Bands es zusehends an Identität mangelt.

It's impressive how the musicians manage to provide even the most aggressive song with a rousing, super catchy melody that eats into your ears and encourages you to run the record through the system for another round. Excellent early demo work by the German 80's thrash band. Stephan
