Encyclopaedia Metallum: What a great German band... for having only two guys they sure know how to make awesome music in Epic proportions ! "On My Way Home" is their third release since getting started in 94 (I´ve not heard the other two) and offers a brilliant combination of melodic atmosphere and Death Metal brutality. They cite OPETH as being an influence but no need to worry about clone possibility as they manage to construct their own unique, diverse songs. Pick this one up and be ready for soothing acoustic arrangements, lengthy songs and even parts that sometimes drift into the psychadelic realm of things (without getting boring) met with brutal Death growls and sometimes clean, "dreamy", for lack of a better word, vocals. These guys manage to stay a step above the hordes and I hope they find label support soon. Visit their website and order this 60 minute long CD today.

Das Duo hinter SCYTHE ist definitiv mutig. Sehr mutig sogar, denn der im Death Metal verwurzelte Stilmix der Band umfasst von blackmetallischen Rasereien, alternativ angehauchtem Gitarrengeschrammel, OPETHschen Songsstruktur-Wirrwarr, solidem Thrash bis in zu episch-ruhigen Akustikpassagen so ziemlich alles, was sich irgendwie zu einem Song verlöten lässt.
Mit dem Opener „Creation Of Wrath“ stellen SCYTHE erst mal klar, dass Tampa, Florida, kein unbekanntes Terrain of der musikalischen Metal-Landkarte ist. Besonders das Drumming und die Gitarren zeigen, dass die Beiden ihre Hausaufgaben gemacht haben und ohne weiteres ein gutes, wenn auch konventionelles Stück schreiben können.

Die eher ruhigeren, komplexeren Stücke wie „On My Way Home“ lassen die Band in einem anderen Licht erscheinen, wobei man merkt, dass das die Musiker in beiden Stilrichtungen zuhause sind und anspruchsvollere Musik machen können, dabei aber nicht vergessen haben, wie sich ein ordentlicher, zeitloser Death Metal Track anhören muss – wie das deutschsprachige „Vergänglichkeit“ beweist. Ruppig-holprig und liebenswert altmodisch scheppert „Frozen In Years Part 2“, das durch ruhige, stimmungsvolle Akusitkgitarren eingeleitet wird, aus den Boxen, bis eine unverzerrte Gitarrenmelodie den Song unterbricht und schließlich in einem elegischen Gitarrensolo endet. Mit diesem Song spannt die Band letztlich doch noch den Bogen zwischen den Stilen.

„On My Way Home“ ist unvorhersehbar und deshalb interessant, kaum hat man sich in die derben Death Metal Parts eingefunden, bricht die Band mit den Konventionen und entführt in atmosphärische, ruhigen Klangwelten. Insgesamt ein gutes Album, das Zeit braucht, um sich zu entfalten. Zu kritisieren ist lediglich eine gewisse Uneinheitlichkeit, so will der alternativ-schrammelige Titeltrack nicht so ganz zum Rest des Albums passen. Dass es auch anders geht, zeigt „Passing Through Days Of Life“, eine stimmige Verbindung aus zart-zerbrechlichen, unverzerrten Parts mit derbem Death Metal-Gerumpel.
Unterm Strich zeigt der Daumen nach oben, man hört, dass sich hier eine Band nicht den einfachen Weg eingeschlagen hat und der Menge hinterher rennt, sondern auf eigenen Pfaden wandelt – da kann man über die ein oder andere Verirrung wie zum Beispiel den völlig überflüssigen Hidden Track hinwegsehen.
